FAQs & Public Service Tips: Tech Tips -- Hardware & Software

Info and tips for helping Sims Library users.

Wifi or Wireless Network

Southeastern offers two wireless networks: SLU-secure and SLU-guest.  Both networks require passwords.

The SLU-guest's password is changed on the first business Monday of the month.  The new password will be sent to appropriate groups on campus to share with campus visitors and campus attendees.

Students and employees should use the SLU-secure wireless option.

The Office of Technology provides instructions for connecting to campus WiFi on their website.

If you need assistance connecting to SLU-secure, contact the Student Help Desk (x2700) or the Faculty/Staff Help Desk (x5555). **Some devices may require additional steps to for wireless service: i.e. Chromebooks, Android phones.

SLU-Secure: log in with W number and email password
SLU-Guest: librarians have access to the monthly guest password

Students needing assistance may phone the Student Help Desk at (985) 549-2700

All floors of the Library are "hot spots," but in some areas where there are a lot of stacks or walls, the signal is weak.

Wireless printing is not available at this time.

The Math Lab is located in Room 208 of Sims Library.

MyCompLab

MyCompLab is educational software by Pearson. Southeastern students use the software for English classes;. Students must have a student access code and course ID in order to register for MyCompLab. Their English instructors give this information to them. Library personnel do not have access to this information and cannot assist them with MyCompLab.

MyMath Lab

My Math Lab is a product of Pearson. Students need a access code and course ID from their instructors in order to log into the Pearson software. While library staff are encouraged to direct questions about MyMath Lab to math faculty, we have seen that many math students want to sue MyMath Lab on library PCs. Please let Beth S. know so that she can update the Library Director about this from time to time.

Note:  Students who are using MyMathLab should use the software in the Math Lab on the 2nd floor of the Library, and not in the Reference area, Serials Department.

Dr. Tim Hudson (Chair of the Mathematics Department) and Janie Branham (Interim Library Director) have agreed that math students should not be accessing MyMathLab on library PCs. Please direct these students to the Math Lab, x5867.

Xerox Copier & Scanner

A Xerox Copier/Scanner is available in the Library and located near the front Checkout Desk. Copies cost $.04 each. Color copies are now available from these machines. Each color copy costs $.25. Copies can only be purchased using a University ID or Lion's Lagniappe Card. There are no cash purchases allowed.

Library visitors who do not own a Lion's Lagniappe card may purchase a card for $1, and then put additional money on the card. A kiosk is located in the library lobby.

People who do not have money on their card can be directed to the Document Source. Their hours and phone number are posted on the bottom left side of their homepage.

These machines can also send scans to Southeastern email accounts.

Scanners & Copiers

PLEASE DO NOT SCAN COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS. (These include books, articles, sheet music, images, etc.)

Students should be directed to the Xerox photocopier in front of the Checkout Desk. The  Xerox machine will scan in black/white and in color.

Be sure to demonstrate the scanning process to students and also point out the posted sign that lists steps for scanning.

  • Scanned files can be saved to USB drive or emailed to the user.
  • The scanned materials can be emailed to a valid email address.
  • When scanning is complete, click the yellow CLEAR ALL button.

Help with Moodle

Word Processing on VMs

The virtualized PCs that students use have Open Office. This is helpful because students create documents in different word processing software and versions: MS Word (.doc, .docx), Word Perfect (.wpd) and Works (.wps) are some of the most common.

Students may try to open files from their webmail accounts or from within Moodle or from a flash drive. If you click on the document icon, you may find a grey bos which allows you to open with Microsoft Word. If not, you will need to save it to the desktop and then open with MS Word.

Example 1.:  MS Word files in Moodle want to open in Open Office

Try this in Chrome or Firefox:

               Right Click

Open in Word in a new window

               File opens

RTF files open in Open Office

Save to Desk top as Word

The default is Microsoft Office -- students should save work to Google apps Drive and format with Office apps.

Zamzar is an app that will convert files.

Green Screen Login Issues

Students and employees log in with their W number and password.

Students can print but employees do not have printing privileges as they have not paid a student technology fee. They can register and print as guests. Employees may also have print privileges in their department/workplace.

Guests (non-university affiliates) must register and set a password.

  • Some students who have W numbers may not be able to log in. They may not be registered for the current semester OR they may actually be registered at a different institution (university, technical or community college or high school Dual Enrollment student).

Respondus Lockdown Browser

Some instructors require that students use Respondus lockdown browser when taking exams in Moodle.

Library VMs have Respondus Lockdown installed.

Students who need to download Respondus on their personal device should visit Respondus.

The Student Help Desk can provide further assistance. Click here for contact information and hours of operation.

WS_FTP & Software Downloads

Students will sometimes come to the library and ask for WS_FTP (a file transfer program) so that they can upload their web pages onto a Southeastsern server. Dr. Joe Burns (Comm professor) teaches both Undergrad and Grad courses in website design.

Instructions for downloading WS_FTP are also available.

Mac Files on Library VMs

Students who try to open MAC files ending in .pages on the library computers, should save the file to the desktop.  Then, they should rename the file using the ending in  .zip.

Example:   englishpaper.pages   -->  englishpaper.zip

This creates a zip folder and students should be able to view the content somewhat. All the zip folders have more than one file in them, so students may have to open a few of the files before they find their content.  In some cases, the document will be saved as a picture, but at least it's printable.

In other cases it will be a pdf and easily readable and printable.

Uploading Videos to YouTube

Uploading a Video to YouTube:

1. Plug in Video Camera

2. Go online and sign into YouTube.com using a Gmail address

3. Choose "Upload" at the top

4. Choose "Select Files from Your Computer"

5. The videos will be available under one of the USB drives like F: or G:. (Same place as a flash drive would be located)

6. Double Click and your upload will begin. It may take awhile depending on the length of the video.
