ISAT Graduate Program: APA Citation Examples

This guide will assist students in the ISAT program.

Citing Examples: APA vs. IEEE

It's important to recognize there are different formats and styles in academic and scientific writing.

Chemistry journals use the ACS Style Guide published by the American Chemical Society.

Some journals use the CSE Manual ofr Authors, Editors and Publishers from the Council of Science Editors.

IEEE journals use the IEEE Editorial Style Manual for Authors.

There are other styles. You will have to "translate" citations in those other formats to APA style in the ISAT program. Consistency is very important,

In APA style, the writer refers his reader to sources using in-text citations. The citations provide just enough information that the reader can go to the Bibliography at the end of the paper to see the complete reference. The APA Publication Manual provides directions for consistent format.

Some of the resources that ISAT students consult and cite will use a different format, not APA. For example the IEEE publications generally use number citations in square brackets [ ].  In this style, a reference in the paper would appear as [12], and refer the reader to the end of a paper where she would find the list of references in numerical order. The reference would be written:

In APA format, the writer would use an in-text citation with the author's name at the end of the sentence, and the page number (Lucky, 1965, p. 549). The reader could then check the Bibliography at the end of the paper for the complete citation:

Lucky, W. R. (1965). Automatic equalization for digital communication. Bell System Technical Journal, 44(4), 547-588.

IEEE Style:

[12] W. R. Lucky, "Automatic equalization for digital communication," Bell Syst. Tech. J., vol. 44, no. 4, pp. 547-588, Apr 1965.
