For almost three thousand years Mexico was the site of some of the most advanced Indian civilizations, most notably the Aztec and Mayan. In many ways, these civilizations were more advanced than their European contemporaries, especially in such spheres as astronomy, mathematics, and city organization. Upon seeing the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, for the first time, Spanish explorer Bernal Díaz del Castillo was awed by its beauty and confessed he had never seen a city in Spain that could match it. However, Díaz del Castillo's arrival coincided with that of Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico who captured the Aztec capital in 1521. Since then, it has been known as Mexico City. Mexico's struggle--and eventual success--through the subsequent years to become an independent country is chronicled in the second edition of Historical Dictionary of Mexico. It covers the history of Mexico from its great Indian civilizations to the controversial election of Felipe Calderón in 2006. Creedman's original Historical Dictionary of Costa Rica appeared in 1977. The new edition is nearly 50% larger, the fruit of several summers the author spent working in this most interesting part of Central America. The earlier text has been updated. Its coverage has also been notably extended, especially in respect to ecomonic and cultural history. The bibliography has been brought up to date, and a chronology has been added. The author's death intervened in June 1985, when only the first draft of the new edition had been written. His friend Gary G. Kuhn, professor of history, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, completed the work, to which the series editor, Laurence Hallewell, has also contributed.

Honduras, one of five original Central American states, became a separate republic in 1839 following independence in 1821. It is perhaps least-known of the five. Located centrally in the isthmian area, pre-historic Honduras was the site of a swirling encounter of major cultures-Nahua, Maya, Chibcha.
